The Spring Lake Police Department employs four (4) part time civilian employees to assist in crossing children from the major intersections around the two (2) schools located in the Borough.

At this time the Borough of Spring Lake Police Department is not currently hiring crossing guards.

Dispatchers

Police Dispatchers are civilian employees of the Borough of Spring Lake Police Department who are responsible for dispatching assignments to police units using a computer aided dispatch system, radio, and/or telephone. This position is both exciting and challenging, and has a direct impact on the quality of life for the citizens of the Borough of Spring Lake.

Special Officer Class I

Special Officer Class I are hired by the Borough of Spring Lake Police Department to assist with the beach front  and Third Avenue Business District during the summer season.  Officers are detailed with patrolling the beach and business areas to assist visitors with questions or information.  Officer are also tasked with enforcement of borough ordinances and parking enforcement.  New hires will be sent to the Monmouth County Police Academy to take part in a two week training for the position.  The academy generally runs the first part of May each year.

Special Officer Class II are hired by the Borough of Spring Lake Police Department to supplement patrols during the busy tourist season.  Officer tasked with enforcement of borough ordinances, enforcement of all motor vehicle laws, as well as responding to emergency calls. Â New hires will be sent to the Monmouth County Police Academy to take part in a sixteen week training for the position.  The academy generally runs twice each year either from January to May or August to December.

At this time the Borough of Spring Lake Police Department is not currently hiring Special Officer Class II.

Police Officers

Provide operational policing services to the community by protecting life and property, preserving peace and safety, preventing crime and upholding law in a manner which has regard for the public good and rights of individuals.

Undertake operational patrols, respond to situations to enforce laws and/or maintain public order, exercise police powers, investigate incidents or offenses, and prepare and present evidence for successful prosecution.

Minimum Requirements to Participate

To be admitted into this evaluation you must meet all of the following requirements. Failure to meet and provide appropriate documentation that demonstrates fulfillment of these requirements will result in your disqualification from the Police Officer Evaluation.

Age: Candidates must be at least 18 years old to take the test.  To be appointed to the Police Academy, candidates must be at least 18 years of age and not have reached their 35th birthday at the time of appointment to the Police Academy Training Program.

Prior Convictions and Violations: Candidates will be automatically disqualified for any of the following circumstances:

  • Convicted of a felony
  • Conviction of or plea agreement to any offense – including any offense involving domestic violence – that would preclude you from legally owning and/or carrying a firearm. This would also include any pre-trial intervention agreement that results in your being legally precluded from owning/carrying a firearm
  • Currently (or were within the last 12 months preceding the date of this announcement) on probation for an indictable offense
  • Convicted more than once of any offense of driving while intoxicated
  • Dishonorably discharged from any branch of military service or law enforcement agency
  • Pled to or been found guilty of any motor vehicle violation five or more times within the past two years
  • Had, on more than two occasions, a bench warrant issued for your having failed to appear in court for a motor vehicle charge or any criminal charge

Education: You must have earned at least a high school diploma or a GED.  Further, if you pass the test, you must have completed either of the following in order to continue in the evaluation:

  1. A minimum of 60 college credits from an accredited college or university; or
  2. An honorable discharge from the United States Military after serving a minimum of two full years of continuous active duty.

Failure to provide proof that you have satisfied either the college education or military service requirement by the date an invitation is made to you will result in your disqualification from any further consideration as a Police Officer Candidate.

Citizenship: Candidates must be citizens of the United States at the time of appointment to the Police Academy Training Program.

Driver’s License: Candidates must possess a valid motor vehicle driver’s license at the time of appointment to the Police Academy Training Program.

Medical Prerequisites: Candidates must meet the medical and physical standards established by the Monmouth County Police Academy.

Note: Employees of the Borough of Spring Lake Police Department, hired after July 2012, may not have any visible tattoos/brandings that cannot be covered while on duty or in uniform. Also, derogatory, sexually suggestive, discriminatory, or otherwise objectionable tattoos/brandings are prohibited in all circumstances.
